PEOPLE

SMG employs a staff of about 40 people. That staff includes licensed structural engineers, licensed civil engineers, and  licensed mechanical engineers. SMG's additional staff is made up of EITs, designers, drafters and administrative personnel. SMG has been able to maintain long-term employees, some of whom have been with SMG since the 1970s.

Engineers at SMG are currently licensed in more than half of the U.S. states and several Canadian provinces.

Travis Grutsch, PE, SE
Chief Executive Officer

Travis is a licensed civil and structural engineer with a master’s degree in civil engineering, and manages out of SMG’s Missoula, Montana branch office. Since joining SMG in 2002, he has been responsible for structural design and management of complex temporary and support structures for the construction industry. Travis’ projects encompass a variety of construction engineering services, including the design of falsework, cofferdams, shoring, trestles, and other specialized structures.

Nick Merriss
President and Chief Operations Officer

Nick’s focus is managing administration, resources, and opportunities to continue to run the business successfully. ​Responsibilities include oversight of business operations, company-wide resource allocation, contract administration, human resources, and business development. He also assists in developing feasibility reports and documents for large infrastructure projects and analysis of multi-option concepts His background experience is founded on construction management and encompasses a broad range of projects, from residential, commercial, heavy civil, and underground utilities to large-scale bridge, structure and levee projects.

Josh Christiansen, PE, SE
Vice President

Josh is a licensed civil and structural engineer with a master’s degree in civil engineering with a focus on structures. In addition to technical expertise, Josh oversees SMG's financial objectives and processes. Josh joined the SMG team in 2011, and has excelled in managing a variety of engineering projects. His work includes material handling facilities, building design, complex finite element analysis and temporary construction structures.

Bj Morgan, PE, SE
​Vice President

Bj is a licensed civil and structural engineer with more than twenty years of experience dedicated to construction engineering and the design of temporary structures. His experience covers a wide range of support structures used to facilitate bridge and building construction. Bj takes pride in creative thinking required to develop practical, economical solutions.

Kenny Dupuis, PE, SE
​Vice President

Kenny has been with SMG since 2008 and is a licensed civil and structural engineer with a B.S. and M.S. from Washington State University.  Kenny has focused his structural design and project management efforts on heavy bridge construction, material handling systems, and mining and industrial facilities.  His main goal is to provide clients with safe and efficient structural design for the wide variety of projects he’s associated with.

Rod Monroe, PE, SE
​President Emeritus and Board Member

Rod is licensed in civil and structural engineering. For over forty years, Rod has been designing structures for the commercial, industrial, mining and bridge construction industries. His experience includes material handling equipment and process design, procurement of permits, project management and feasibility cost estimates.
